Butte County’s Halloween calendar is spread across a dozen places, so I pulled the whole thing together here, week by week, with the family events, the haunted houses, and the parades all in one spot.
Still to come this month
Friday, October 16
The Show and Stroll Spooktacular and Haunted Alley runs in downtown Oroville from 5 to 9 p.m. The Haunted Alley opens at 6:30 and runs to 9, with the entrance at 1346 Myers Street and five dollars cash at the door. The Patrick Ranch Haunted House in Durham runs 6 to 9 p.m.
Saturday, October 17
The Frights and Lights Parade lights up downtown Oroville at 7 p.m. This is its third year running, and it has become the parade worth driving for. The Witch’s Market is at 1078 Gallery, 1710 Park Avenue in Chico, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Downtown Oktoberfest Bar Crawl runs 4 to 9 p.m., 21 and over and ticketed, hosted by B Street, The Banshee, and Argus Bar and Patio. The Patrick Ranch Haunted House runs 6 to 9 p.m.
Sunday, October 18
Halloweentown comes to The Barn at Meriam Park, 1930 Market Place, from 4 to 8 p.m. The Patrick Ranch Haunted House runs 6 to 9 p.m.
Saturday, October 24
The Paradise Community Halloween is at the Terry Ashe Recreation Center, 6626 Skyway, from 6 to 8 p.m. This is the ridge’s main family event. The AMain Hobbies Trunk or Treat runs 1 to 3 p.m. at 2860 Fair Street in Chico. The Butte Humane Society Howl-O-Ween Pup Crawl is at Parkside Tap House, 115 3rd Street, from noon to 6 p.m., with dogs in costume. The Patrick Ranch Haunted House runs 6 to 9 p.m.
Sunday, October 25
The Spellbound Market is at Lassen Traditional Cidery, 643 Entler Avenue Suite 52, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Creatures of the Night, a Halloween drag cabaret, is at The Barn at Meriam Park from 6 to 9 p.m. The Patrick Ranch Haunted House runs 6 to 9 p.m.
Thursday, October 29
The Keller Williams Chico Area Trunk or Treat runs 4 to 6 p.m. in the Keller Williams parking lot at 2080 East 20th Street, Suite 170. You get decorated trunks, candy, and a free, easy stop for families who want something early in the evening without a crowd.
Friday, October 30
Downtown Chico Treat Street runs from 2 to 6 p.m. and it is free, with a costume contest and prizes, live music, and photo opportunities with Chico Police and Fire while downtown shops hand out candy along the route. Note the date: Treat Street is the night before Halloween this year, which means you can do both. CARD Movies in the Park shows Hocus Pocus 2 at DeGarmo Park, 3428 Esplanade, for free, with activities and food trucks from 5 p.m. and the movie at dusk around 6:45, so bring blankets and chairs. The Patrick Ranch Haunted House runs its final night, 6 to 9 p.m.
Saturday, October 31
Haunted Buildings of Chico is a ghost-stories and paranormal-history lecture at the Chico History Museum, 141 Salem Street. After that it is neighborhood trick-or-treating, and Amber Grove and California Park are the two that go all out. I wrote a full guide to those neighborhoods, including when to go with little kids versus older ones.
Running all month
The Patrick Ranch Haunted House in Durham, at 10381 Midway, runs on weekend evenings through October 30, 6 to 9 p.m. Chico Haunted Tours run downtown, with a suggested twenty-dollar donation.
Planning notes
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, which changes the whole weekend. Expect bigger crowds, earlier starts, and more people traveling between towns.
The last three days really stack up. Thursday the 29th has the Keller Williams Trunk or Treat, Friday the 30th has Treat Street and Hocus Pocus at DeGarmo Park, and Halloween itself is Saturday, so you can do something every night without repeating yourself. The 24th and 25th are the other stacked weekend, and if you only have one day, that is the one with the most options across the most age ranges.
For little kids, Treat Street on the 30th and the Paradise Community Halloween on the 24th are both daylight or early-evening and built for them. And always check before you drive, because small community events change dates and locations more often than the big ones.
Why I keep a list like this
I get asked some version of “what’s going on this weekend” more than almost anything else, usually by people who just moved here and have not figured out where things are posted yet.
Butte County’s calendar is spread across a dozen places and half of it lives on Instagram flyers. Pulling it together is a small thing I can do that makes the place easier to live in, whether or not you ever buy a house from me. If you are new here and want more of this, let’s talk. I’ve got you.
