Best Chico Neighborhoods for Halloween Decorations and Trick-or-Treating
Every October I get asked where to take the kids, so here are the two Chico neighborhoods that genuinely go all out, and how to pick the right one for the kids you have.
The two neighborhoods that go all out
Amber Grove and California Park are the two to know. What sets them apart is that it is not a handful of houses doing something impressive. It is the whole neighborhood participating. You are not hunting for the one good block. You park, you walk, and it keeps going.
Amber Grove
Amber Grove is north of town off the Esplanade, built out in the late 1990s and 2000s, with wide streets, a lot of cul-de-sacs, and a neighborhood park. It has become Chico’s go-to for decorated holidays generally, Halloween included, and it has the reputation to prove it.
Fair warning: it gets really busy. That is part of the appeal, and it is also the thing to plan around. The pocket near Peterson Park is the easiest section to walk and where most of the foot traffic concentrates. One practical note from people who go every year, the streets look similar and there are a lot of cul-de-sacs, so if you plan to cover more than the park area, look at a map first and pick a route. It saves you doubling back.
California Park
California Park is in southeast Chico, built around the lake, and it is the one locals mention in the same breath as Amber Grove.
California Park does not get quite as crowded. Busy is still the right word for it, so do not picture an empty street, but it does not reach the density Amber Grove hits after dark. The tell is who you see out: in California Park you will find little ones trick-or-treating early in the evening, which is a good sign about the pace, because parents are not fighting a crowd to keep track of a three-year-old. The decor is great and the candy is good, and those two things matter more than people admit.
Which one for which kid
This is the part I want to be direct about, because it is where the night goes well or badly.
Little kids should go earlier, right before dark, somewhere in the 5:00 to 6:30 window, since dusk lands around 6. You get decorations still visible in the light, shorter lines at doors, and sidewalks you can actually navigate with a three-year-old.
Amber Grove after dark is genuinely packed. For older kids, that is the whole point, because the crowd is the atmosphere. For little ones, it can be a lot: hard to keep track of them, harder to move, and parents end up more stressed than the kids are. It is the same neighborhood and two completely different nights depending on when you show up. If you have little kids and want the easier version, start in California Park, where you will have company, since other families with small kids are out early there too.
Two things to bring that nobody tells you
Bring water, more than you think. This one surprised me. We ended up with a lot of kids coming up and asking us for water while they were trick-or-treating. They are walking for a long time in costumes, often warm ones, and nobody plans for it, so bring water for your own kids and consider bringing extra.
Bring an oversized candy bag. The standard plastic pumpkin fills up fast in a neighborhood where every house is participating. A pillowcase or a tote works better than anything sold as a Halloween accessory, and it means you are not making a trip back to the car halfway through.
Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday
That is worth knowing when you plan. A Saturday Halloween means bigger turnout, more people coming in from outside the neighborhood, and earlier starts than a weeknight, so both of these neighborhoods will be busier than usual.
If you want something calmer
Treat Street in downtown Chico is a ton of fun for the kids and the gentler option for younger ones. It runs in the afternoon rather than at night, it is designed for ages 12 and under, and downtown businesses hand out candy along a mapped route, so you get daylight, sidewalks, and no driveways to navigate. A lot of families do both this year, since Treat Street falls on Friday the 30th, so you get the downtown afternoon one day and your own neighborhood the next. The full rundown is in my guide to Halloween events in Butte County.
A couple of small things
A porch light on or decorations out means they are handing out candy, and a dark house means they are sitting this one out. Other than that, go enjoy it. The people in these neighborhoods decorate because they genuinely love doing it, and the best part of their night is watching kids come up the driveway.
If you are trying to figure out where in Chico you would want to live, not just visit on Halloween, that is my job. Let’s talk.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best neighborhood for trick-or-treating in Chico? Amber Grove and California Park are the two that go all out, with whole-neighborhood participation rather than a few standout houses. Amber Grove draws the biggest crowds.
Where should I take little kids trick-or-treating in Chico? California Park is the easier of the two, since it is busy without reaching Amber Grove’s after-dark crowds and you will see other little ones out early. Go right before dark, roughly 5:00 to 6:30. Treat Street downtown on October 30 is a daylight alternative for ages 12 and under.
Which is less crowded, Amber Grove or California Park? California Park. It is still busy, but it does not reach the density Amber Grove hits after dark, which makes it the more manageable choice with small children.
What should I bring trick-or-treating? Water and an oversized candy bag. Kids get thirsty walking in costumes and frequently ask strangers for water, and a standard plastic pumpkin fills up fast in a fully participating neighborhood.
What day is Halloween in 2026? Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, October 31, which usually means larger crowds and earlier starts than a weeknight Halloween.
Where do you park in Amber Grove for Halloween? Park outside the busiest section and walk in. The area near Peterson Park is the most walkable stretch, and the neighborhood has many similar-looking streets and cul-de-sacs, so a planned route helps.
Is Treat Street on Halloween? No. In 2026 Treat Street is Friday, October 30, the night before Halloween, which means families can do both.
