Why the markets here are worth your Saturday
Butte County grows food at scale. Almonds, walnuts, rice, olives, stone fruit, and produce of nearly every kind come out of this valley, and a lot of it never leaves the region. That means our farmers markets are not a novelty. They are a genuinely practical way to buy groceries.
Fall is the best stretch of the year for it. Summer produce hangs on into September, the fall crops come in behind it, and the weather finally makes standing outside pleasant again.

Chico farmers market days and hours
Saturday Market
Downtown Chico municipal parking lot at East 2nd and Wall Streets. Year round, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine.
This is the big one and the one most people mean when they say “the farmers market.” Produce, meat, eggs, honey, nuts, bread, flowers, prepared food, coffee, and a rotating cast of artisans.
My actual Saturday routine, since people ask. Eggs from Taste of Freedom Farms. Berries from Saeturn Farms, a generational family farm out of Gridley that has been at this market since 1995. Stone fruit from Dhillon Farm, who have been coming to the Chico Saturday market since 2000 and are usually first on the scene with the season’s early fruit. Then a cappuccino from Tender Loving Coffee, who roast their own beans a few blocks away on East 6th, and bread and a pastry from Camina.
That is the whole trip. You can do it in forty-five minutes or stretch it into a morning.
Parking. This is the part everyone complains about, and the answer is do not fight for a spot right at the lot. I have consistently had luck parking around 4th and Flume and walking over. It is a short stroll, the streets over there turn over less, and you are not circling.
Go early if you want the best selection, because the good stuff thins out by mid-morning.
Wednesday Market
North Valley Plaza Mall parking lot on Pillsbury Road, near Trader Joe’s. Year round, 7:30 a.m. to noon.
Smaller and quieter than Saturday, which some people prefer. A good option if weekends are already full for you.
Thursday Night Market
Downtown Chico, Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m., running April through late September.
This is less a grocery run and more a weekly street festival, with over 200 vendors, live music, food, and kids’ activities spread through downtown. It is one of the best free things Chico does, and it is the event I point people to when they are visiting and want to understand the town.
The season wraps in late September, so early fall is your last chance until spring.
Durham Grange Farmers Market
Sundays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the Midway in Durham behind Dollar General. The season runs into late October.
This one is new, operated by Durham Grange #460 as a certified market, and it has been building a real Sunday following since it opened. Fresh produce, prepared food, and handmade goods, in a town that has every reason to have a market of its own given what grows there.

Paradise Farmers Market
6491 Clark Road, in the Paradise Alliance Church parking lot. Tuesday mornings, 7:30 a.m. to noon, running roughly late spring through October.
The Paradise market has been part of the community’s rebuild story, and it is worth supporting for that reason alone. Fall is when apples show up, which on the ridge means something.
Oroville, Orland and the surrounding towns
Oroville, Orland, Gridley, and Willows all host markets, though days and locations shift more often than the Chico markets do. Oroville in particular has had multiple markets running in recent seasons. Before you drive, check the current schedule with the Oroville Chamber or the Glenn County market organizers.
What is in season in fall in Butte County
September. Late tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, melons finishing up, early winter squash, grapes, figs, Asian pears, and the first apples. Fresh almonds and walnuts start showing up as harvest comes in.
October. Winter squash and pumpkins in full swing, apples at their peak, pomegranates, persimmons, sweet potatoes, and the first fall greens. Olives get harvested around this time, though most head to processing rather than market tables.
November. Persimmons, pomegranates, citrus starting up, hardy greens like kale and chard, root vegetables, and storage squash. Walnuts and almonds are widely available. Thanksgiving week markets are worth planning around.
A few practical tips
Bring cash even though most vendors take cards, because some do not and the ones who do sometimes lose signal. Bring your own bags. Go in the first hour for selection, or the last half hour if you are hoping for end-of-day deals, though understand that not every farmer discounts.
If you are new to town, talk to the growers. Ask what is good this week rather than looking for what you would buy at a grocery store. That is the whole difference.
